UPSL Champions Cup 2022 Preview – Chicago Nation FC (Chicago, IL)

November 1st, 2022

The UPSL Champions Cup is set to kick off this Thursday, November 3 in Querétaro, Mexico, marking the first time semi-pro sides from the US and Mexico compete for an international trophy. The UPSL Champions Cup will feature four of the best from the UPSL competing against four of the best from the UPSL MX.

This year, expect to see plenty of talent on display as UPSL Fall 2021 National Runner-up Chicago Nation is set to make the trip.

Coming out of Chicago, Illinois, Chicago Nation FC (5-1-2) are currently seeking to be crowned Midwest Central Premier conference champions after scoring 24 goals in 8 games during the regular season, conceding only 8.

Crowned UPSL Regional Cup champions in the summer of 2021, the team also regularly features in the UPSL National Playoffs and National Finals. This past season, they went all the way to Final 8, losing only to USL Championship-affiliated side Queensboro FC.

Led by founder and Coach, Garrett Hayward, the team features several players with college and pro experience. Captain Nick Klajban, former center mid for the University of Wisconsin, will be expected to run play through the middle and provide defensive cover for his back line. Issac Suttom, former player for USL-side North Carolina FC, will also provide plenty of attacking threat from the wing-back position. The team also features a couple of pros with experience overseas in the top leagues in Poland.

“The playoffs are here and so we’re in the mindset of competing for this UPSL National title and the Champions Cup. We’re focused, we want to win the first-ever UPSL Champions Cup. We’re in a win or go home mentality, so it’s all about the process of preparing the boys.” Hayward explains.

“We look forward to seeing how we match up with the talent in Mexico. This is the first tournament of its kind and we couldn’t pass up the opportunity.”

UPSL Champions Cup matches will be broadcasted live with commentary in both English and Spanish through VYRE Network. You can find VYRE on Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire, Android, iPhone, or your Smart TV by downloading the VYRE Network app for free or on their website at
