Idaho Cutthroats Announce Guillermo Huerta Huitrón as Head Coach from Club America

February 15th, 2023

With the UPSL Premier season set to kick off in the coming weeks, perennial top team from the Mountain West conference, the Idaho Cutthroats (Boise, ID) have announced a major coaching addition ahead of the new season. The club has announced Guillermo Huerta Huitrón, former Club America U20 Coach, as Head Coach of the UPSL team this Spring season.

From Mexico City, Mexico, Guillermo Huerta Huitrón spent years playing with Club America and the Mexican National team between 1984 and 1992, he then went on to coach at various first division teams across Mexico. Since retiring in 1995, Huitrón has amassed over 20 years as a professional soccer coach. When describing what sparked the initial conversation between the Idaho Cutthraots and Huitrón, club owner Hector Palacios credits the teams’ performances in the UPSL Champions Cup this past Fall in Querétaro, Mexico.

“We had professional clubs in Mexico that we connected with when we went down for the UPSL Champions Cup. A few professional teams from Liga MX, including Club America, were interested in working with us to help establish Club America Youth Academies in the US. Once we started speaking more, we had members of their coaching staff inquiring more about the club. This summer, the club even want us to come back to play friendly matches.”

After strong performances in the UPSL Champions Cup against Mexican opposition, the Idaho Cutthroats earned themselves a third-place finish in the tournament, advancing further than any other UPSL team. Hearing about the team’s accomplishments on the field and the level of professionalism in the Idaho Cutthroats organization is what attracted Huitrón—that and the excitement of coaching in the US for the first time. Despite considering retiring from the game, Huitrón wanted to experience living in the United States for the first time in his career.

“A new experience is what excited me the most, also that this team aspires to win championships. That winning mentality coupled with the backing and support from a professional, hard-working board of directors is amazing to see. It’s good to see everyone working hard to set the standard and be great, and with my philosophy that I bring to the game there’s no doubt that we can’t be the best team in the league. We are here to win championships.”

The Idaho Cutthroats are set to kick off this Spring season with Huitrón taking charge of his first season in the UPSL and Mountain West Premier conference. They have made appearances in the UPSL National Playoffs before and will look to secure a first-ever UPSL National Championship title after having made it to the National Finals in 2021.
