Former UPSL & Atlanta United U19 Defender, Caleb Wiley Called Up to US Men’s National Team

April 14th, 2023

The US Men’s National Team has named its 23-man roster for the inaugural Allstate Continental Clasico on April 19 against Mexico in Glendale, Arizona. Earning his first senior national team call-up is former Atlanta United U19 Defender Caleb Wiley.

After being named both MLS Player of the Matchday and MLS Team of the Week in his just second start of the MLS season, Caleb Wiley’s meteoric rise continues in professional soccer. The defender signed his first professional contract with Atlanta United in January 2022 after a stellar Fall season with the Atlanta United U19s in the UPSL Georgia Premier Division.

In just two years, Wiley has gone from playing semi-professionally in the UPSL Premier Division to his MLS debut, to now joining the US Mens National team. The rising star’s success is a testament to his hard work and progression through the Atlanta United Academy, where he first started at just 12 years old. In his last UPSL season, the Atlanta U19s finished in second place, scoring an incredible 34 goals in 10 games in a very competitive Georgia conference, with Wiley starting every game at left back.

Wiley has now gone on to make 18 out of 26 MLS appearances in his year-and-a-half transition to the pro game so far. This MLS season alone the 18-year-old has recorded three goals and two assists in just seven matches in a new left wing role for the team.

The Allstate Continental Clasico kicks off April 19th where the United States will take on Mexico in a classic rivalry match. The game will begin a new friendly series that will consistently feature the USMNT against top-tier opposition from North and South America. This will also be the fifth match for the US National Team under interim head coach Anthony Hudson who will look to put a heavily MLS-based squad to the test against a tough Mexico side.
