Former Brockton FC and United Africa Forward Walter Varela Signs for Portland Hearts (USL)

April 11th, 2025

Former Brockton FC United and United Africa FC standout Walter Varela has officially signed a pro contract with Portland Hearts, a brand-new expansion club competing in the USL. The Cape Verdean striker, known for his electrifying pace and clinical finishing, continues his inspiring soccer journey with this new chapter in Maine. Varela’s transition to the professional ranks marks a proud moment for both of his former UPSL Premier Division clubs Brockton FC and United Africa FC.

Varela’s path to the pros began after moving to the United States and launching his collegiate career at Bunker Hill Community College. There, he quickly made a name for himself, earning a spot on the 2018 Division III All-American Team. Over two standout seasons, Varela netted 22 goals in just 21 appearances. It was after he competed at the college level that Varela began playing in UPSL and pursuing a professional contract.

Following his signing this offseason, the forward wasted no time making his mark with Portland Hearts. On his birthday, March 20, he made his debut in the club’s first-ever competitive match in the U.S. Open Cup. Varela scored the opening goal on the 17-minute mark to help set the tone for a dominant 4–0 US Open Cup victory.

Walter expressed his excitement in his recent move to Maine saying, “It seems like a such welcoming place to live and play soccer, and I couldn’t imagine a better location for this opportunity, and next chapter in my pro career.”

Walter expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to represent Portland, saying, “I’m so grateful for this moment and so honored to be able to do that for the club.” As Portland Hearts continue to build their legacy, it seems a former UPSL player’s early goal-contribution has already become a cornerstone of the club’s history.
